On Wednesday 5th December, Women in Rail held its fourth Annual Conference at the offices of Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner in London.
The theme of the conference was “The Power of Great Leadership: successfully leading oneself and empowering others”.
Our keynote speaker, Dame Inga Beale (former Chief Executive Officer, Lloyd’s of London) shared her personal story as a successful leader, from her early days at Prudential to her recent role as CEO of Lloyd’s.
We heard from inspirational speakers for whom great leadership is….
Rob Brighouse (Chairman, East West Railways Company): having clear and strong values and ensuring one remains true to them at all times;
Dyan Crowther (Chief Executive Officer, HS1), being yourself, an independent maverick with a vision, bringing energy and strong values to the task;
Staynton Brown (Director D&I and Talent, Transport for London): it is about identifying what drives you and being authentic, show courage but also vulnerability;
Polly Payne (Directors General for Rail Group, Department for Transport), it is about sharing, cultivating diverse teams and not being afraid to ask for the support you need
and for Nicola Shaw CBE (Executive Director, National Grid), great leadership is about being able to think strategically and knowing when important decisions have to be made and make them, taking calculating risks.
Deborah Hulme (Minerva Engagement) gave us a fascinating insight into the neuroscience of leadership.
The Conference was attended by 120 people from across the industry. The feedback has been truly amazing and we want to thank BCLP for hosting the event and our amazing speakers for taking the time to come and share their stories and advice.
Thank you very much!
Best wishes,
The WR Team
