Brief Description

  • You will lead the development and implementation of the route strategy and the route asset management plans, managing and directing the maintenance and renewals work banks, specifications and acceptance criteria.

You will act as client representative for renewal activity and assets and, as the asset management lead, you will agree key priorities with stakeholders to support delivery of route objectives

About the role (Internal & External)

Are you a chartered Engineer (or in progress), with proven leadership in business engineering activities, and expertise in safety-critical engineering management?

This pivotal role in our Wales Route maintenance team requires a candidate with exceptional financial acumen, the ability to make calm, rational decisions, and confidence in a boardroom setting.

Your Main Responsibilities will be to:

  • Manage, direct and lead a team of Route Discipline Engineers. Direct the Route Engineers’ work to develop Route specific asset management plans including all maintenance and renewal activity. Be accountable for developing the combined route asset management plan and making informed decisions based upon asset condition, performance information and efficiency.
  • Monitor route asset management plans to confirm that they are appropriate to deliver required regulatory outputs and amend the plans as necessary to deliver compliant output targets.
  • Review investment papers for compliance to national requirements and participate in funding negotiations.
  • Manage and direct systems reliability and optimise renewal and enhancement activities for systems across the route.
  • Provide engineering leadership to all maintenance and renewal engineers and manage the provision of an engineering support service. Monitor and improve the technical competence of route engineers and manage the arrangements for technical briefing of staff engaged in route asset management.
  • Manage any issues, recommendations or notices of national significance and liaise with the national team to develop and roll out within the Route.
  • Lead the assurance of asset safety, integrity and sustainability across specified Routes to manage long term business risk and optimise asset outcomes in line with Corporate Strategy, including establishing appropriate mechanisms to monitor route assets in terms of performance, reliability and safety, leading the arrangements to rectify any deteriorating trends in asset safety and performance.
  • Undertake the role of client for all route project delivery (maintenance, renewal and enhancements) upon the achievement of funding and output certainty.
  • Lead and develop the specification of acceptance criteria for asset works including design approval, acceptance of equipment and hand back to maintenance as appropriate. Verify the audit acceptance processes are being discharged appropriately.
  • Act as the Designated Competent Person (DCP) for both formal and local investigations. Report on accidents/incidents and undertake investigations as required.

 You will ideally have 

  • Chartered Engineer (or working towards)
  • Management of large teams
  • Management of complex systems
  • Be able to set strategies and lead people
  • Broad engineering experience
  • Renewals and enhancements experience
  • An understanding of the maintenance of assets
  • Proven ability to lead engineering activities in a business environment
  • Experience in the integration of complex engineering systems
  • An understanding of safety management systems and risk assessment techniques
  • Expertise in engineering management in a safety critical industry

 Salary: This role is a band 1B, £97,850 – £110,081 per annum.

35 hours a week. Depot/site working predominantly.
