Wensleydale Railway Volunteering Day – Monday 21 September 2026

Join Women in Rail Yorkshire on Monday 21 September 2026 for a hands on volunteering day on the Wensleydale Railway on, set in the scenic Yorkshire Dales. This is a practical, outdoor experience supporting work to reopen the heritage line between Leyburn and Redmire. It is a chance to build your understanding of track maintenance while contributing to a live railway project.
What to expect
You will take part in real track maintenance activity. Tasks may include:
- Sleeper top clearance
- Sleeper replacement
- Rail joint lubrication
- Vegetation clearance
The exact work will be confirmed on the day following a safety briefing.
Timings
- 08:30 Meet at Wensley level crossing
- 10:30 Break
- 12:00 Lunch
- 14:00 Break
- 16:00 Finish
Event information
- This is physical outdoor work on a live railway environment
- PPE is required. As a minimum: safety boots and high visibility vest – Please let us know in advance if you are unable to provide these items
- Gloves and safety glasses are also recommended
Please bring
- A packed lunch
- Plenty of drinks and snacks
- Sunscreen or weather appropriate clothing
Other notes
- Parking will be available in the small yard next to the level crossing; our volunteers will greet you, provide a safety brief and explain the day’s activities
- Toilets will be available on or near site
