The Shadow King by Maaza Mengiste – Book Club

7pm – 8pm, 9 March 2021

About this Session
WR South Book Club continues with our February book, The Shadow King by Maaza Mengiste.

Shortlisted for the Booker Prize 2020, our book is set in Ethiopia 1935, where Mussolini’s army are looming. Hirut is struggling to adapt to her new life as a maid for an officer in Emperor Haile Selassie’s army, and longs to do more for the war effort than care for the wounded and bury the dead. Hirut, and her fellow women take up arms and join the fight. The Shadow King is a gorgeously crafted and unputdownable exploration of female power, and what it means to be a woman at war.

The Book Club discussion will take place on Zoom and will be a reflection on the themes in the book and what we’ve learnt from them. Not only will we have a great discussion on the book of the month, there will be the opportunity to engage with others in the Women in Rail South community. It will also be a chance to give your suggestions for future books for us to read and share together.
