CAF is seeking a Business Development Manager to drive growth within the UK rail industry. This exciting role offers the opportunity to lead major bids, build strategic industry relationships and help secure high-value rolling stock contracts that shape the future of rail transport.

Business Development Manager

A Business Development Manager plays a pivotal role in securing new business opportunities and managing the end-to-end bid process. The role combines strategic business development with meticulous bid management to ensure the successful acquisition of contracts within the UK rail industry. They possess a deep understanding of, and established contacts within, the UK rail sector, alongside strong analytical and interpersonal skills, exceptional project management skills and proven commercial acumen.

Key Responsibilities

Bid Management

  • Leads the bid management process from initial opportunity identification through to submission and contract award.
  • Considers the organisation’s position relative to competitors to develop winning strategies for senior management consideration.
  • Develops and manages bid plans, ensuring all activities are aligned with timelines and requirements.
  • Coordinates and challenges cross-functional teams, including engineering, finance, social value and manufacturing, to compile comprehensive and compelling competitive bids.
  • Ensures all bids are high quality and compliant with client specifications and regulatory requirements.
  • Conducts risk assessments and develops mitigation strategies for each bid.
  • Prepares and presents bid reviews and approval documentation to senior colleagues within the sales and commercial team.

Business Development

  • Identifies and pursues new business opportunities within the UK rail industry, focusing on rolling stock projects.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with key stakeholders, including clients, partners and industry bodies.
  • Conducts market research and analysis to identify trends, competitor activities and potential areas for growth.
  • Represents the organisation at industry events, conferences and meetings to promote capabilities and solutions.

Academic and Professional Qualifications / Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field (desirable).
  • Strong understanding of the UK rail market, including regulatory and compliance requirements.
  • Proven track record of commercial success through managing complex bids and securing high-value contracts.
  • Excellent project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple bids simultaneously.
  • Strong financial acumen and experience in developing cost models and pricing strategies.
  • Exceptional communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills.
