Role Overview

Stadler Rail is seeking a Senior Engineer – Locomotives to lead UK railway engineering operations for the locomotive product family. This role combines strategic oversight with extensive technical expertise in mechanical and electrical engineering.

The successful candidate will be responsible for shaping engineering strategy, ensuring compliance with safety and performance standards, and driving innovation across fleet maintenance and project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic & Technical Leadership

• Provide support to the Engineering Director and Head of Location.
• Advise across all Levels 1-4 of the Entity in Charge of Maintenance (ECM).
• Develop engineering strategy, governance and change management processes.
• Ensure compliance with Railway Group Standards and current legislation.
• Deputise for senior location management as required.

Operational Excellence

• Develop and implement Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) and On Condition Maintenance (OCM) programmes.
• Support business-as-usual operations on a day-to-day basis.
• Monitor fleet performance and operational costs, driving continuous improvement and engineering optimisation.
• Oversee inspection and maintenance activities in line with safety and environmental management systems.
• Maintain and enhance rolling stock maintenance practices.

Governance & Compliance

• Identify and mitigate engineering risks relating to fleet safety and reliability.
• Produce technical investigations and reports while ensuring Stadler Rail Service UK remains informed of relevant industry developments.
• Maintain comprehensive technical documentation and operational procedures.
• Oversee safety incident reporting, investigation and resolution activities.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

• Align engineering priorities with Heads of Function, Supply Chain teams and site leadership.
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with manufacturing partners and customers.
• Participate in cross-functional working groups and strategic meetings.

Main Objectives

• Deliver safe, punctual, reliable and cost-effective fleet operations.
• Support performance teams through the provision of holistic technical expertise.
• Ensure workforce competence and strong safety performance through modern engineering practices.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential

• Chartered Engineer (IMechE or IET) status, or willingness to work towards achieving professional registration.
• Degree qualification or equivalent experience in a relevant technical discipline, including rolling stock engineering.
• Experience working within a locomotive environment (experience with Stadler products is desirable).
• Experience managing engineering projects and maintenance teams.
• Proven leadership capability within dynamic and high-pressure operational environments.
• Strong customer-focused mindset with a commitment to quality and service excellence.
• Experience managing engineering change and leading senior engineering teams.
